HOME TRENDS: Small changes add ‘zen’ to living space

When walking into her Southwest Ohio home for the first time, Tywana Houston thought, the house was “cute but needed some work.”

Luckily, Houston and her husband of nine years were ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work. A fresh coat of paint started their efforts, and soon small touches followed to personalize their home. A bathroom renovation has been their big project so far.

The couple has plans to focus on the master bath next, as well as improving the front yard so it is “in better shape”.

While it wasn’t always easy, it was worth the effort. The pair has worked hard and had slowly created their “Zen” space – calming, relaxing and the perfect place to unwind after a long day.

We asked Houston, 55, to tell us more:

Year your home was built: 1960

Square footage: 2,936

Architectural design: Ranch

What is your favorite part of your home and why?: The living room, I think it’s because I love the layout. I think of it as my zen place.

Most difficult house project: The bathroom.

What was your inspiration for the project: It was old and outdated.

Advice to anyone looking to refresh or remodel their home: Be patient and don’t get overwhelmed. Take your time.
