Extremely cold with chance of flurries today; Cold Weather Advisory in effect

Today will be partly sunny with a chance of morning flurries and extremely cold temperatures, with highs around 11 degrees and winds making it feel as cold as minus eight degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

There is a Cold Weather Advisory in effect until 10 a.m. on Wednesday due to dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20 degrees below zero. The NWS said that wind chills that low could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, and very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia.

Residents should dress is layers including a hat, face mask and gloves, the NWS said, and pets should be kept indoors as much as possible.

Tonight will be mostly clear with lows dropping to around minus four degrees, though light winds will make it feel as cold as minus 13 degrees.

Wednesday will be mostly sunny with highs around 21 degrees, followed by a mostly cloudy night with lows around 14 degrees.

Temperatures will rise a little more on Thursday, with highs around 31 degrees under partly sunny skies, followed by a mostly cloudy night with lows around 17 degrees.
