Wittenberg wins NCAC women’s basketball championship one day after upsetting No. 10 DePauw

Wittenberg lost to both teams by lopsided margins in the regular season: 83-57 at DePauw on Dec. 8; and 82-58 at Ohio Wesleyan on Jan. 19.

The former Chaminade Julienne and Connecticut star Williams-Jeter, who was hired in May, guided the team to its ninth NCAC tournament championship and first since 2015.

Wittenberg (18-7) earned the NCAC’s automatic NCAA tournament berth and will find out where and who it plays next at 2:30 p.m. Monday. The selection show will air on NCAA.com.

Wittenberg will enter the tournament on a 10-game winning streak. Kristie Kalis had 13 points against DePauw (23-3) and Jade Simpson scored 12. Tayrn Cash scored on a layup with 45 seconds left to give Wittenberg a 53-52 lead, and Kalis made two free throws with seven seconds to play.

In the championship game, Kalis scored 18 points, and Abigail Yunker had 13. Simpson had 13 rebounds and five points. Delaney Williams scored seven of her 11 points in overtime.

Kalis, a senior forward from Wilmette, Ill. was named the tournament’s most valuable player, taking home the Nan Nichols Award. Yunker also made the all-tournament team.
