Wells, who will be a senior, announced Saturday on Twitter that he has committed to play at Butler University in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs are coming off a fifth-place finish in the Big East tournament.
This past February Wells began to think about where he would like to go to school. He remembered how much he enjoyed a trip to Butler when his older sister visited the campus. So he emailed coach Bill Mattingly to express his interest in the school.
Mattingly invited Wells for a visit over spring break. Then Mattingly watched Wells compete in an AJGA event in early July at Columbus, Indiana. Wells tied for fifth, and a week ago Mattingly called with a Division I scholarship offer 25 minutes after Ball State called with an offer. Wells talked with his parents Chris and Lisa and accepted the Butler offer that day.

Wells is excited about the golf program, the opportunities in the business school and to be on a campus where he can enjoy watching his fellow athletes compete in other sports.
“I’ve always wanted to go to a school where I could go to sporting events and they have a good basketball team,” Wells said. “And they have really good academics.”
Wells has big goals for college. He wants to be a team leader, qualify for regionals and ultimately qualify for nationals and be an athletic and academic All-American. He also expects his education, which will include two internships, to set him well for a job in the Indianapolis area. But he has a bigger goal he hopes will be within reach after college.
“My ultimate goal is to be able to turn pro and compete on the PGA Tour each week,” he said.

For now, Wells has one more season to add to his legacy as a Wildcat. After three straight district appearances, two state appearances, including a seventh-place finish last year, Wells wants to go back to state and compete for a championship.
“It’s meant a lot to be able to represent Springfield High School and the city of Springfield and go to districts and state,” Wells said. “It’s an honor, honestly.”
As an All-Ohio performer, Wells’ picture is being added to the athletic hallway at the high school. He’s excited to be on that wall next to recent star athletes Danny Davis and Trey DePriest.
“My picture’s right next to them,” he said, “and that’s an honor.”
