Week 1 roundup: Daniels throws four TD passes to lift KR past Mechanicsburg

BELLEFONTAINE — Kenton Ridge High School quarterback Julian Daniels threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another as the Cougars beat Mechanicsburg 35-21 on Friday night at AccuSport Stadium in Bellefontaine.

Daniels went 13-for-17 for 228 yards through the air. He threw two touchdown passes to junior Caleb Hall and one each to sophomore Brody Runkle and senior Dale Vannoy. Cougars senior Jackson Patton rushed for 115 yards on 24 carries as KR won its season opener for the first time since 2017.

Indians junior quarterback Conley Bogard went 11-for-21 for 111 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another score and junior Conner Eyink rushed for a TD for Mechanicsburg (0-1).

The Cougars led 20-7 at the half. Bogard threw a TD pass to junior Austin Haynes with 3:12 remaining in the third quarter to cut the Cougars’ lead to six points.

Daniels hit Vannoy on a 21-yard TD pass with 9:54 to go to make it 28-14. The Indians cut the lead to seven points on a 1-yard run by Bogard, but couldn’t get any closer. Daniels found Hall on a 56-yard TD pass to Hall with 5:49 remaining to seal the victory.

The game was moved from Kenton Ridge to Bellefontaine due to an ongoing grass renovation project at Richard L. Phillips Field.

Urbana 44, Northeastern 35: The Hillclimbers scored 23 second half points to pull away from the Jets as the former Central Buckeye Conference rivals met for the first time since 2010.

Northeastern junior Jackson Jones rushed for two TDs, junior Cody Houseman rushed for a score, senior Garrett Chadwell returned a kickoff for a TD and junior Diezel Taylor threw a TD pass to junior Jacoby Newman for the Jets.

Catholic Central 37, Bradford 6: Irish junior Berkley Little ran for 162 yards and three TDs as Catholic Central rushed for 300 yards in the season-opening victory.

Irish junior Brody Adams scored a TD and Brayden Strother returned an interception for a TD in the victory.

Northwestern 41, Southeastern 6: Warriors junior Preston Allen rushed for 106 yards and three TDs as the Warriors beat the Trojans for the first time since 2019.

Northwestern junior quarterback Ried Smith went 15-for-22 for 137 yards and a TD to senior Miles Estes. Warriors senior Austin Dewey and junior Tyler Romine each rushed for TDs for Northwestern.

Southeastern senior Jacob Alderson scored on a 7-yard run for the Trojans.

Fairborn 33, Tecumseh 0: Skyhawks sophomore quarterback Wesley Rohler threw one TD and rushed for another as Fairborn beat Tecumseh for the first time since 2019.

Cameron Faircloth, Zyaire Cavitt, Aidan Davis each rushed for a TD and Brayden Johnson caught a TD pass in the victory for Fairborn.

Cedarville 42, Fayetteville-Perry 0: The Indians jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead and never looked back to win their season opener for the third straight season.

West Liberty-Salem 42, Graham 14: Tigers senior running back Josh Wilcoxon rushed for 91 yards and four TDs as West Liberty-Salem beat their Champaign County rivals for the second straight year.

Tigers senior quarterback Nick Shifflet went 12-for-15 for 158 yards and a TD and rushed for 46 yards and a TD. WLS senior Jack Bahan caught six passes for 89 yards and a TD.

Greeneview 34, Northridge 12: Rams senior Chase Walker rushed for two TDs as Greeneview cruised to its fourth straight season-opening win.

Rams senior QB Alex Horney threw a TD pass to senior Joey Giannoble, senior Cooper Payton returned an interception for a TD and sophomore Jordan Stafford added a TD run for Greeneview.

Miami East 33, Greenon 0: The Knights lost their season opener for the fifth straight season.

Mount Gilead 49, Triad 16: The Indians jumped out to a 20-0 first quarter lead and never looked back, beating the Cardinals in the season opener for the second straight sea
