URBANA — Urbana University and the Springfield Triathletes and Area Racers (STAR) team will host the first area triathlon of the season May 13.
The 8 a.m. race features a 300-meter swim in the indoor pool at the Urbana University Aquatics Center, a 13-mile bike segment and a 5-kilometer run.
“With the short swim, we were hoping this would interest a lot of first-timers,” said Keith Clay, president of STAR, which increased its membership from 50 to 75 in its second year. “A lot of them are intimidated by open-water swims. The distance of the run and bike are equal to most sprint triathlons.”
The bike course takes competitors on a loop from Urbana University’s campus, southwest on Ohio 55, north on Ohio 560 and east on U.S. 36.
The run course is an out-and-back on the Simon Kenton Trail, the bike path between Urbana and Springfield.
