State wrestling: Two local schools, several boys, girls win championships

Graham and Legacy Christian won team titles again, Springboro had a record day and three boys and three girls from the area won individual titles as the state wrestling tournament concluded Sunday at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.

Led by champions Brogan Tucker (132 pounds) and Gunner Cramblett (165), Graham outpointed Columbus DeSales 157-120.5 to claim its 22nd straight Division II state title and 24th overall. Tucker, a sophomore, won his second title. Cramblett, a junior, was runner-up last year.

Graham qualified 10 wrestlers to the state tournament. Other placers for the Falcons were runners-up Hayden Hughes (138) and Eli Jacks (150); Colt Ryan (120), Bryce Kohler (144), Luke James (157) in third place and Jake Landis (106) in eighth.

Led by three-time state champion Dillon Campbell, Legacy Christian showed more signs of a growing dynasty in Division III with its third straight state title. The Knights won comfortably 115.5-82 over Milan Edison. Other placers for the Knights were runners-up Eli Campbell (113) and Boede Campbell (144); Brayden Brown (138) and Ethan Cooper (157) in third and Nathan Attisano (120) in fifth.

In Division I, Springboro, which won the district tournament, scored the most points and had the highest finish in program history. The Panthers finished eighth in the state and scored 58 points for the best finish among schools from the Southwest District. The 2011 Springboro team had placed 10th and scored 43.5 points.

Placing for the Panthers were Myles Johnson (190) in third place, Conner Kleinberg (150) in fourth, Matt Kowalski (175) in sixth, and Jack Hoffman (165) and Aidan Weimer (215) in eighth.

Other area individual runners-up were Vandalia Butler’s Noah Moreland (120) in Division II and Miami East’s Cooper Shore (120), Greeneview’s Ashtan Hendricks (138) and Preble Shawnee’s Brayden Doran (157) in Division III.

Troy Christian placed eighth in the Division III team standings with 47 points.

Lakewood St. Edward continue its dominance in Division I with its eighth straight title and 36th overall.

Girls state meet

In the first OHSAA-sponsored girls tournament, Kira Cole (115) of Miami East, Cassia Zammitt (130) of Miamisburg and Eve Matt (140) of Greeneview won individual state titles.

Girls who finished as runner-up were Averi Wiley (100) of Piqua, Lacie Knick (120) of Northmont, Sophia Rohrs (140) of Lebanon and Lexi Fornshell (145) of Lebanon.

Sidney’s Josie Davis (125) won state the past three years when the tournament was sponsored by the state coaches association. She was denied a fourth state title Sunday when she was called for an illegal move in her semifinal match and disqualified. She won the the third-place match with a pin in 34 seconds.

Greeneview and Lebanon tied for fifth place with 49 points. Harrison won the team crown with 97 points.
