Springfield last remaining unbeaten GWOC team

Springfield (6-0) is the only undefeated Greater Western Ohio Conference team following its 35-7 defeat of Xenia and Fairmont’s 25-24 shading of previously unbeaten Miamisburg to highlight Friday’s Week 6 high school football.

Other area 6-0 teams are Bellbrook and Middletown Madison (Southwestern Buckeye League), Chaminade Julienne (Greater Catholic League Co-Ed North), Mechanicsburg (Ohio Heritage Conference) and Coldwater and Marion Local (Midwest Athletic Conference).

All those teams secured their high playoff positions in their respective regions. Here’s some other takeaways from Week 6 action:

• Fairmont coach Dave Miller didn’t consider it a long shot to switch promising quarterback Garrett Baker to defensive tackle. According to Miller, Baker could excel at multiple positions for the Firebirds.

“He’s a really good athlete, strong and has very good leverage,” Miller said after Baker’s partial blocked punt led to a 25-24 defeat of host Miamisburg in the final seconds. “That’s why he’s down there. He could play a lot of positions.”

A 6-foot-1, 200-pound junior, Baker is a cousin of Fairmont standout senior linebacker Trey Baker. The punt block was the first of Garrett’s career. He blew through the middle of Miamisburg’s line untouched and deflected the ball with an elbow.

“I was so excited,” he said. “I didn’t say anything and no one knew I blocked it until the game was over.”

• Troy senior running back Jaydon Culp-Bishop remained the GWOC’s No. 2 rusher with 262 yards and five touchdowns in a 49-14 defeat of Tippecanoe. He has 974 yards rushing and 16 TDs. Troy (5-1) is at Butler (4-2) in Week 7.

Xenia senior Sincere Wells maintained his GWOC rushing lead (1,038 yards, 12 TDs), but was limited to a season-low 66 yards in that loss at Springfield.
