Springfield’s Chris Via picked a fine time to earn the first win in his Professional Bowlers Association career.

Via won the U.S. Open -- a major on the PBA Tour -- on Sunday by a single pin (214-213) over Jakob Butturff in Reno, Nev.

Butturff had a chance to tie with a strike but left a single pin standing. The win gave Via the coveted green jacket and the $30,000 top prize.

Via, the 29-year-old two-hander, was the top seed heading into Sunday’s championship round after edging out Butturff in the position round Saturday, 266-237.

Via has had a solid run following his top-five effort at last year’s U.S. Open. He finished fifth at the 2020 PBA World Championship, rolled a televised 300 game during the East Region Finals of the 2021 PBA Players Championship and finished fourth at the 2021 PBA World Championship.
