Randy Savage was known as “Macho Man” during his professional wrestling career, but he also held a different handle in a different pro enterprise. From 1971-74, he was Randy Mario Poffo, minor league baseball player.
Poffo, who died in a car crash on Friday, played for four teams. That included, in 1974, 131 games with the Tampa Tarpons, the Class A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. Despite hitting .232, he led the team with 66 RBIs and tied for the team lead with nine home runs. He joined the Reds organization after a major muscle tear and ligament separation in his right arm forced him to learn to throw left-handed.
