Springfield to play at home in regional final

The Springfield Wildcats will play at home in the Division I, Region 2 football championship game thanks to an upset on Saturday.

No. 4 seed Powell Olentangy Liberty beat No. 1 Dublin Coffman 18-15. Olentangy Liberty (8-1) will play at No. 3 seed Springfield (7-1) at 7 p.m. Friday with a spot in the state semifinals on the line.

Olentangy Liberty avenged its only regular-season loss by beating Coffman. It lost 24-17 to Coffman on Sept. 4.

Springfield advanced when No. 2 seed Northmont had to forfeit Friday because of a positive COVID-19 test. The Wildcats seek their second straight regional championship. They beat Coffman 7-3 in the regional final last year before losing 31-24 to Cincinnati Elder.

The other Division I regional final matchups are: Medina at Mentor; Westerville Central at Pickerington Central vs. Westerville Central; and Cincinnati St. Xavier at Lakota West.
