Football playoffs: Greenon, Shawnee among second-round winners

Greenon won a playoff game in its first postseason appearance, Shawnee and Mechanicsburg advanced with shutout victories and Graham stayed unbeaten.

Those were the area highlights Saturday in the second round of the state football playoffs. Here’s a quick glance at those games and a look ahead to the regional semifinals coming up this weekend

Division V, Region 20

No. 8 seed Greenon 30, No. 9 Cincinnati Taft 28: Nathan Hawks kicked three field goals, including two in the fourth quarter as the Knights advanced.

Evan Davis threw two touchdown passes for the Knights. Wade Davis also had a touchdown pass. Clay Hough, Zack Stevens and Bass Moore had touchdown catches.

Greenon will play at No. 1 Roger Bacon (7-0) in St. Bernard on Saturday.

No. 7 Shawnee 34, No. 10 Madison 0: The Braves (4-2) recorded their first shutout victory since Week 5 of the 2019 season (41-0 against Urbana) while handing Madison (4-4) its first shutout since 2015.

Shawnee will play No. 2 Blanchester (6-1) on Saturday.

No. 11 Cincinnati Mariemont 25, No. 6 West Liberty-Salem 0: The Tigers (3-4) were shut out for the second straight week. They lost 33-0 to Mechanicsburg in the final game of the regular season.

Division IV, Region 16

No. 6 Graham 28, No. 11 Eaton 14: The Falcons won a playoff game for the second time in school history in their first postseason appearance since 2003. They will put a 7-0 record on the line against No. 3 Cincinnati Wyoming (6-0) in the next round Saturday.

Wyoming advanced when its game against No. 14 Cleves Taylor was cancelled because of a positive COVID-19 test at Taylor.

Division VI, Region 24

No. 1 Coldwater 37, No. 17 Triad 6: The Cardinals exited the playoffs with a 3-5 record. They still have regular-season games scheduled against Buckeye Central and Cedarville.

No. 2 Mechanicsburg 34, No. 15 Deer Park 0: The Indians (7-0) stayed undefeated with their second shutout in a row and third of the season. They will play No. 7 Bainbridge Paint Valley (6-1) on Saturday.

No. 7 Paint Valley 42, No. 10 Greeneview 7: The Rams were eliminated from the playoffs but will play regular-season games against Northwestern and Kenton Ridge the next two weeks.
