High school basketball: What to know about the GWOC so far

One third of the way through the high school basketball season, storylines are forming across the Miami Valley.

In the Greater Western Ohio Conference, one team already has a two-game lead in the boys conference race while two potential juggernauts have risen on the girls side.

Here is a closer look at both:

GWOC boys

Miamisburg is 6-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.

Wayne, Centerville, Springfield, Beavercreek and Fairmont are all 2-2.

The Vikings, who finished in seventh place last season, already have wins over the Warriors, Wildcats and Beavers this season, and they are set to host the Elks on Friday night.

Miamisburg 6-9 senior center Andrew Hoerner and Beavercreek 6-3 senior guard Isaiah-Michael Williams lead the league in scoring at 24.4 points per game.

Hoerner also leads the league in rebounds with 11.6 per game while Wayne senior guard Mykell Shackleford leads the league with 4.4 assists per game.

Billy Osmanski, a 6-foot senior guard, is also averaging double figures in scoring (12.0) for Miamisburg.

Hoerner and Williams are returning first-team All-GWOC selections along with 6-1 Fairmont senior guard Evan Gentile (17.4 ppg.) and Northmont senior BJ Hatcher (12.2 ppg.).

Fairmont is 9-0 overall and 5-0 in league play while Springboro is 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

The Panthers are the defending league champion, but the Firebirds beat them 62-51 on Dec. 11, and they are set to play again Jan. 22 at Springboro.

Janiyah Hargrave, a 5-9 freshman guard, leads Fairmont in scoring (19.7 ppg.) and rebounding (6.8) while 5-8 junior guard Kaylah Thornton is scoring 16.3 points and grabbing 5.9 rebounds per game while leading the team with 5.4 steals.

6-foot Springboro senior guard Bryn Martin leads the league in scoring at 21.6 points per game and assists at 5.9 while 6-2 senior teammate forward Aniya Trent leads the league in rebounding (10.1), blocks (2.8) and field goal percentage (53.3).

Martin, Trent and Thornton are the only first-team All-GWOC players returning from last season.
