Five area standouts All-Southwest District first team

Five area girls and boys basketball players received top honors on the All-Southwest District high school basketball teams that were released on Friday.

Seniors Corinne Thomas of Tecumseh and Mikala Morris of Kenton Ridge were girls first-team selections. Named to the first-team boys were Ra’Heim Moss of Springfield, Adonis Davis of Emmanuel Christian Academy and Catholic Central’s Sabien Doolittle, all seniors.

It was the second straight season Thomas, a 5-foot-8 guard, was named to the Division I first team. The program record-setter averaged 22.0 points and scored a career-high 51 points this season against London. She also ranks No. 2 all-time in Ohio for most 3-pointers in a game (13) and is only the second Tecumseh player to surpass 2,000 career points. She signed with West Liberty University (W.Va.).

Morris, a 6-2 center, averaged 27 points, 21 rebounds and 4.0 blocks as a senior and was first team D-II, leading the Cougars to a 19-3 regular-season record. She became the state’s all-time career rebounder this season (1,700-plus) and surpassed 2,000 career points.

As a senior, Morris had four games of 40-plus points and 14 games of 20-plus rebounds. She signed with Quinnipiac (Conn.).

Moss, a 6-4 guard, led the Greater Western Ohio Conference National East in scoring (18.0) and rebounding (7.2) and was first team D-I. He’s been a key three-year starter for the Wildcats, who tied Centerville for the National East title. Springfield (15-9, 10-2) was scheduled to play Sidney in a D-I sectional final at Butler on Saturday.

Also a football standout, Moss is unsigned and is considering offers to play basketball at Spire Academy in Ohio, Cincinnati and Toledo.

Adonis Davis, 6-4, averaged 15.0 points and was first team D-IV. He surpassed 1,000 career points and is ECA’s second all-time career scorer and leader in rebounds and blocks. Emmanuel Christian was 17-5 in the regular season and tied with Troy Christian for runner-up in the Metro Buckeye Conference.

Doolittle, 6-4, averaged 15 points and 9.4 rebounds for the Irish, who went 18-3 in the regular season and won an Ohio Heritage Conference South Division title (14-2). He also surpassed 1,000 career points and has offers from Wittenberg and Capital, among other NCAA D-III programs. Catholic Central was scheduled to play Emmanuel Christian in a D-IV sectional final at Troy on Saturday.

Area girls second-team picks were Springfield sophomore Mickayla Perdue (D-I), Greenon junior Reagan Ware (D-III) and Catholic Central sophomore Abbigail Peterson (D-IV).

Area girls third-team selections were Tecumseh senior Presley Griffitts (D-I), West Liberty-Salem senior Gabby Hollar (D-III), Greeneview junior Sylvie Sonneman (D-III), Mechanicsburg sophomore Grace Forrest (D-IV) and Angie Smith, a freshman at Yellow Springs (D-IV).

Area boys second-team picks were Charlie Bertemes, a senior at Southeastern and Catholic Central senior Trey Dunn (D-IV). Third-team selections were Kenton Ridge junior Tyler Eberhart (D-II), Yellow Springs senior Andrew Clark (D-IV), Cedarville junior Colby Cross (D-IV) and Fred Shropshire, a junior at Emmanuel Christian (D-IV).

The Southwest District is one of nine throughout Ohio. Southwest District media voted on coaches’ nominations, who were based only on the regular season.

First-team selections will be considered for All-Ohio honors, as will Mr. and Ms. Basketball and state coaches of the year. The All-Ohio teams will be released by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association the week of the girls and boys state final fours.
