Fairmont will induct six into athletic hall of fame

Fairmont High School will induct five alums and a former trainer into its Athletic Hall of Fame at 1 p.m. Feb. 8 in the high school auditorium.

Here’s a glance at the six:

Chelsea Welch: A 2013 Fairmont graduate, Welch started at point guard for four seasons and helped lead the team to a state championship as a senior in 2013. She’s the program’s all-time assists leader (400) and owned the career record for steals (302) until this season. She was the Horizon League Player of the Year at Wright State in 2018. She’s now an assistant coach for the Ohio Bobcats.

Jean (Nace) Mills: A 1982 graduate, Mills starred for the Fairmont softball team, hitting .479 in 1981 and .396 in 1982. On the mound, she was 9-2 as a junior and set a school record with a 16-0 record as a senior. She helped lead Fairmont to a 22-1 record and a state championship in 1982. She died at 59 in February 2024.

Josh Murphy: A 2008 graduate, Murphy earned four letters in football and two in baseball. He hit .618 as a senior. That’s the 16th-best single-season average in Ohio history. He hit .508 in his career, which is the 21st-best average. He set a school record with 55 hits as a senior. After high school, Murphy played football at Case Western Reserve and played baseball at Case Western and Ohio Northern.

Robin Lensch: She served as Fairmont’s head athletic trainer from 1998-2018. She was inducted into the Ohio Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame in 2022.

Megan (Kelsey) Bernard: A 2017 graduate, she competed in cross country, track and swimming. She qualified for the state cross country meet in 2005. She was part of the 3,200-meter relay team that set a school record in 2006. She competed in cross country and track at Bowling Green.

Natalie (Uy) Rego: A 2013 graduate, she became the first athlete in Fairmont history to qualify for the state track and field meet in four events as a senior. In 2013, she finished second in the pole vault, fourth in the high jump and 12th in the 100-meter hurdles and also qualified in the long jump. After her high school career, she competed for Eastern Michigan University. She also has competed at the international level. She’s a two-time national champion in the pole vault for the Philippines.
