Northland, located in Lulea, swept the best-of-five championship series. Smart averaged 19 points in the three games and scored 26 in the second game, a 77-69 victory.
“This was probably the highest stage I have played on,” Smart said. “To battle with the top teams and players for a national title in any country is an honor.
“This game really meant a lot not just to me but more for the club and the city. They have been to the finals five previous times and have received silver all five times. So it was great to be a part of Swedish history and break the curse so to speak.”
Smart played in 28 games this season, averaging 16.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists. She shot 49 percent from the field and 34 percent from 3-point range.
This was her first season with Northland after three seasons with another Swedish team, Kvarnby.
“I ended up going to Northland because Kvarnby had some financial issues and had to leave the league,” Smart said. “So I was very grateful for the opening in Northland.”
Smart is remaining in Sweden for now and plans to coach CrossFit class this summer. She plans to return home for a few weeks this summer and also work on finding a new place to play.
“My time in Sweden has been amazing, and I’m so thankful for my opportunities here,” Smart said. “However, after four years, I am ready to experience new teams and a new country. I want to travel and see more of the world.”
