Where Springfielders can shelter from high temperatures

Several locations are offering cooling centers amid high heat index.

With high temperatures in the 90s and the heat index expected to reach the 100s Friday, many places in Clark County are offering shelter from the weather.

There is a Heat Advisory in effect until 9 p.m. Friday across the region due to heat index values of around 107 degrees.

In a Facebook post, the Clark County Combined Health District advised drinking fluids, wearing heat and sun-protective gear and staying inside to avoid heat stroke or exhaustion. Individuals should check on older adults, young children and people who work outside to ensure they are not experiencing these conditions.

The following locations are currently serving as cooling centers:

Meijer, 1500 Hillcrest Ave.: Open from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m.

Walmart, 2100 N. Bechtle Ave.: Open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Walmart, 200 S. Tuttle Road: Open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

New Carlisle Public Library, 111 E. Lake Ave.: Open from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Southern Village Shopping Center, 1123 Sunset Ave., Springfield: Open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Salvation Army of Springfield at 15 S. Plum St. offers a drop-in center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., where people can sit down to play games, listen to music, eat a hot meal and cool off, said Jamie Scanlon, director of social ministry. Anyone who needs to cool off during the week can stop in from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday for an emergency cool drink and a place to escape the heat.

The Victory Faith Center at 424 S. Fountain Ave. offers a cool place to stay and eat a small meal from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, pastor Pauline Hamblin said. The church offers a larger meal and air conditioning from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and from around 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sundays.

At the Clark County Fair, Mercy Health - Springfield is giving water to people who come to the Mercantile Building from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to Dean Blair, executive director of the fairgrounds. The building is air conditioned.
