The Tecumseh Local Schools Board of Education is cutting three positions to save wherever they can, said the district’s superintendent.

“We are still trying to analyze the amount saved. We are trying to save wherever we can,” said Superintendent Paula Crew.

According to the district, the cuts include:

One virtual school coordinator and a part-time ASA paraprofessional since the district no longer needs the virtual school program that they worked for. This program will be shifted into the remote learning program option for when schools reopen in the fall.

One part-time secretary position, in which the employee was placed into a different position within the district.

“As we developed our reopening plan… we risked in some areas to be able to hire in others,” Crew said.

Crew said the district will not seek a levy this year, and hopes these cuts will help.

“We look at every program in the district,” she said. “We are evaluating daily… We are always looking to save money.”

Gov. Mike DeWine announced the $300 million reduction in the K-12 state foundation budget in May as a result of the coronavirus.

Of that amount, Tecumseh’s budget was cut by $397,546, making it the third largest dollar amount in Clark and Champaign Counties.

“The district funding cuts at the end of last year, that combined with uncertainty of what lies ahead financially, we don’t know what this year is going to bring,” Crew said.

Tecumseh is the second district to announce budgets cuts, with Greenon Local Schools being the first.

Greenon is cutting nine positions to save nearly $600,000, in which six of the nine were vacant due to transfers, retirements or resignations.

Their cuts include: a kindergarten teacher, an intervention specialist and special education aide, seventh and eighth grade English Language Arts position, a business/computer teacher, a physical education teacher and the assistant superintendent position.
