Opening his eighth dealership is humbling, and there are many people to thank, VanGorder said.
“I get a lot of the credit because I’ve been on the TV commercials, people know who I am and what I am, but I’m surrounded by the people that have made this possible because we started out in one little lot in Vandalia and we struggled, I struggled to come up with the money to do that, but as we had some success, we’ve been able to reinvest and buy more stores and that’s been kind of the long term plan,” he said.
Several community leaders and elected officials were in attendance for the announcement. They included Derrick Foward, founder, president and CEO of Move Foward Enterprise; Brian Heck, Springfield city manager; Springfield Mayor Warren Copeland, Mike McDorman, president and CEO of the Greater Springfield Partnership; and Denise Williams, Springfield NAACP president.
VanGorder spent 20 years as the vice president of Jeff Schmitt Auto Group before making the decision to break out on his own in 2013.
“Steve has accomplished amazing growth, this is his eighth dealership… His success can be contributed to his positive outlook on life by giving back into he communities in which he serves,” Foward said.
