Milwaukee police officer shot to death; suspect in custody

A Milwaukee police officer has died after being shot in the Metcalfe Park neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.

The officer, a 17-year veteran of the force, was shot near 28th and Wright at approximately 5:05 p.m., CBS affiliate WDJT reports.

The suspect, wanted for drug and gun charges, opened fire on police and then a gunfire exchange ensued.

The weapon has been recovered and the suspect is now in custody. Multiple officers and a SWAT team assisted in the arrest.

According to WDJT, police are not searching for any other suspects.

The Associated Press reports the shooting comes nearly two months after the death of Milwaukee Officer Charles "Chuckie" Irvine Jr., who was killed after the squad car he was in crashed while in pursuit of a reckless driver.
