A Springfield woman has been charged after allegedly allowing her three children to live in “deplorable conditions,” according to an affidavit filed in the case.

Jennifer Diaz, 42, appeared Tuesday in Clark County Municipal Court on three counts of child endangering. She pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released without bond.

Diaz was arrested after the Springfield Police Division responded to a call in the 900 block of Warder Street on an unrelated incident, according to an affidavit.

“While standing in the living room, I observed dog urine and feces on the floor. There were also numerous cockroaches everywhere. I asked (child) where she slept, at which time she pointed down to a mattress on the floor,” the affidavit said. “Her mattress was directly next to two dog cages.”

In the kitchen, the officer observed “food that appeared to be old, on the kitchen counters,” the affidavit said.

“There were dirty dishes everywhere, and more food on the floor. Upon opening the fridge, I observed numerous empty milk gallons, food that was opened and appeared old,” the affidavit said. “The overall cleanliness of the fridge was deplorable.”

The officer then went upstairs and observed a bathroom that was “fairly clean other than deceased bugs in the shower,” the affidavit said. The officer also went into Diaz’s bedroom, which was described as “the nicest room in the residence.”

“We then went to the bedroom of (children). We observed a bunk bed which the (child) slept on. We also observed more dog feces and cockroaches. The floor was extremely dirty, to the point our feet stuck to the floor.”

At that time, the officers requested backup, child protective services were called and Diaz was arrested and charged.
