Officers were dispatched around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday to Colonial Laundry, 1566 E. Main St., in reference to a man being stabbed in the face and another man running around naked, according to a Springfield police report.
When police arrived, they were flagged down by staff from a nearby pizza restaurant who said the suspect fled the scene.
Officers located the suspect, identified as Patterson, a short time later who was “found naked from the waist down only” and wearing a jersey, the report stated. Patterson told police, “I stabbed him because I was in fear for my life” and was still holding the knife.
Police ordered Patterson to put the knife down and placed him into custody where he continued to admit he stabbed the victim, according to the report.
While at the laundromat, officers found blood on the outside of the building, the front entry door, inside on the floor and along the wall of the coin machine, the report stated. They also spoke with a witness about the incident.
The witness told police that when she and the victim arrived at the laundromat, they saw Patterson “inside unclothed from the waist down.” The victim told him to put some pants on and the witness said she was going to call the cops.
“Patterson replied to (the witness) that he will ‘cut you ear to ear.’ After stating he could cut (the witness), Patterson brandished a knife and lunged toward her direction. (The victim) then stepped between the two in an attempt to protect (the witness),” the report stated. “(The victim) was then tripped by Patterson and landed on the floor near the coin machine… while on the ground, Patterson then stabbed the victim an unknown number of times.”
The victim was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center for treatment of lacerations across his forehead, on his left shoulder and on his right leg, the report stated.
Patterson was charged with two counts of felonious assault and criminal trespassing, and was served a no trespass letter.
