A Springfield man was indicted this week in the Clark County Common Pleas Court on a charge stemming from a shooting.

William Portis II, 39, was indicted on aggravated murder, according to court records.

Multiple officers responded around 5 p.m. on Dec. 12 to the 1200 block of South Center Street for a man who had been shot inside Lil Joe’s carryout, according to an affidavit filed in the case.

When police arrived, they found the shooting victim, identified as Deshon Benton, lying on the floor just inside the front door. Benton was unresponsive and later pronounced dead at the scene after suffering multiple gunshot wounds, the affidavit stated.

Officers along with the Crime Scene Unit were able to review surveillance video, in which they saw Portis “enter the store with a pistol in his hand” and appears to argue with another person in the business until he learns that Benton is in front of the store, the affidavit stated.

When Benton enters the store, Portis raises his pistol and shoots him several times before leaving through the front door, the affidavit stated.

Officers were able to identify the person in the video as Portis.

He was listed as an inmate in the Clark County Jail as of Thursday.
