A Springfield man was indicted on attempted murder and assault charges for allegedly shooting at a woman in a road rage incident in late December.

Matthew Victoria, 25, was indicted this week on charges of attempted murder, felonious assault and discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises for a Dec. 30 incident.

According to a police affidavit, a woman was driving southbound on South Limestone Street when she hit her brakes after the car in front of her stopped abruptly. She said the driver of the car behind her “was extremely agitated” and followed her. She heard gunshots at her car before making it home and calling police.

Police found the suspected vehicle, a gray Acura, and arrested Victoria the following day, according to court records. Victoria told police there was a gun in the vehicle and a search yielded a Taurus G2C 9mm.

“Matthew initially denied being in the area. But once confronted with cameras in the area, he stated he thought he was involved in a traffic crash and thought the vehicle was fleeing the scene,” police wrote in their affidavit. “He stated he followed the vehicle trying to get them to stop. He then stated he let his anger get the best of him and stated there were about 3-4 shots fired.”

According to court records, police said they found messages on Victoria’s cell phone talking about the shooting and the minor damage to his car.

Victoria could not be reached for comment as he was in custody at the Clark County Jail, and no attorney is listed for him yet in court records. He is scheduled for arraignment in Clark County Common Pleas Court on Jan. 16.
