First Christian Church is hosting a celebration on Sunday of the near completion of a set of supplies set to ship to Honduras in response to needs during the COVID-19 crisis the country is experiencing.

This is the 11th year the church has done its annual “Birthday Gift to Jesus” project to help communities in need. Fourteen projects have been completed since the start of their Birthday Gift to Jesus tradition in 2009, along with $947,445 of donations gifted to complete the projects.

The church prepared two 40-foot shipping containers that have been transformed into vocational training centers for skills such as welding, electrical work and carpentry. Nearly 500 were also donated by the community for this.

In addition, 150,000 packed meals will be sent as Honduras is experiencing a food crisis due to the coronavirus outbreak and tropical storms.

The congregation donated nearly $83,000 for the meal packs, and the construction and purchasing of the shipping containers. The church hosted three days for volunteers to pack meals with Lifeline Christian Mission in September 2020, January and April 2021. Over 600 volunteers were recruited for these events.

The celebration will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3638 Middle Urbana Road in Springfield.

This will include music, games, lunch served by local food trucks, and tours of the shipping containers. There will also be a special time of dedication prayer over the supplies.
