Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport has received $59,000 in federal relief funding that will be used to offset costs associated with the coronavirus pandemic.

The funding comes from an Airport Rescue Grant through the Federal Aviation Administration and is part of $8 billion in funds that were set aside nationally as part of the American Rescue Plan in order to provide economic assistance to eligible airports in the country.

The money is designed to help those eligible airports to invest in measures that aim to prevent, prepare for and respond to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the FAA.

Springfield city officials are still in the process of figuring out how that money, recently awarded, will be spent. The money has not been allocated for a specific project, but could go toward infrastructure improvements at the airport, said Seth Timmerman, the manger of Springfield-Beckley.

Springfield commissioners approved the grant award during their public meeting Nov. 9. That money is the latest in state and federal funds being allocated to the airport.

The Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport is slated to see more than $11 million in investment in the near future, with a large portion of that money going towards the construction of the National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence .

The airport has also been awarded several federal grants in the past few months that will go toward runway rehabilitation and other infrastructure improvements.
