Roughly 130 Urbana City School employees are scheduled to receive the coronavirus vaccine on Friday, according to the district’s superintendent.

“Although this is only the first step, we are happy to be able to begin the process of having interested staff members be able to get the vaccine. We have a number of staff members who have health conditions which may cause long-term issues if they end up with the virus,” Superintendent Charles Thiel said.

The district has a total of nearly 280 staff members, in which a little under half will receive the vaccination, Thiel said.

“Our faculty, staff, and students have done a great job of maintaining the COVID-19 safety protocols this year which has allowed us to continue in face-to-face instruction for the vast majority of the school year. These practices will continue for the safety of all, but having a portion of the staff receive the vaccine will help to keep them healthy throughout the pandemic,” he said.

Last week, more than 400 Champaign County school district employees, and some family members, got their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine due to the health district having extra doses available.

The districts that received vaccinations included 80 for Triad Local Schools, 110 for Graham Local Schools, 50 for Mechanicsburg Exempted Village Schools, 80 for West Liberty-Salem Local Schools and 120 for the Madison-Champaign Educational Service Center, according to data from the Champaign Health District.

The Clark County Combined Health District, in partnership with the ESC, will administer about 2,700 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to county K-12 school district employees on Feb. 10 and Feb. 13.

Vaccines will also be available to those in the next section of Phase 1b next week. Individuals who are 65 years or older can schedule an appointment now in Clark County.
