Rose City Black Business Block Party & Renaissance to be held this weekend

The event is in celebration of Rose City Black Business Month.

Rose City Black Business Month is being celebrated in Springfield for the third straight year.

This national initiative, which happens every August, was founded in 2004 by historian John William Templeton and engineer Frederick E. Jordan Sr. “to bring attention to the needs of more than two million Black-owned businesses operating across America,” said Karlos Marshall, co-founder and co-executive director of The Conscious Connect CDC, which started the local version in 2022.

“It’s extremely important that the community rallies behind this initiative and supports Black businesses 365 days of the year and not just in August,” Marshall said. “Our organization decided to bring this effort to Springfield one year after I was able to successfully launch Gem City Black Business Month in Dayton in 2021.”

The Rose City Black Business Block Party & Renaissance will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Saturday at Sully Jaymes Memorial Park, 1615 Woodward Ave. The event is sponsored in-part by WYSO Public Radio.

The event will be headlined with live music from band, Vibe 5, an eclectic group of musicians from the Dayton area who perform all genres of music. It will also feature Black food trucks, vendors, artisans and service providers from the region.

Confirmed vendors include KC & J Hawaiian Shave Ice, LLC, Life’s Lemons, Bradley’s Bakery, Da Fudge’s Kitchen, Triumphant, BBs Lashes & Esthetics LLC, Boney the CockaRue, LLC, Home Experts Realty, Keyssentials, and Jai-Team Artwork.

“This event continues to build upon the work that was laid by many people with the Community Navigators program,” Marshall said.

All attendees of the block party are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.
