A Springfield man was charged after crashing in Champaign County and leaving the scene.

A 36-year-old Springfield man was apprehended by Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers after crashing early Wednesday morning in Champaign County and leaving the scene.

Berry Couts Jr. was charged with operating a vehicle impaired, failure to control, leaving the scene of a crash and driving with suspended licenses, OSHP stated.

Troopers responded around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday to the 3000 block of Urbana Moorefield Road to a single-vehicle, rollover crash.

When troopers arrived, they found the vehicle abandoned and filled with open containers of alcohol, OSHP stated.

The OSHP aviation unit also responded to the crash and shortly found several suspects hiding in the woods.

“The helicopter’s tactical flight officer watched the suspect’s get into a second vehicle and attempt to leave the area. The pilot followed the get-a-way car to the Hickory Grove Mobile Home Park where troopers made a traffic stop and apprehended the driver of the crashed car,” OSHP stated.

The driver, identified as Couts, was not reported injured.

The two other suspects were located and found to be passengers in the crash. They suffered minor injuries and were treated on scene by EMS.

Couts has also previously been convicted of operating a vehicle impaired three other times, OSHP stated.

The crash remains under investigation.
