Report: Clerk in Springfield fires shots at would-be robber

A Springfield convenience store clerk said he fired three shots at an armed man Monday night during an attempted robbery.

Springfield police responded at 10:25 p.m. to the Cash & Carry Food Mart in the 1900 block of Mitchell Blvd.

An employee at the store said that the suspect walked in and headed to the cash register. The employee said that the suspect was armed with a gun and was waving for the employee to come to the register, according to an incident report filed by the Springfield Police Division.

The employee reported that he picked up his handgun that was sitting on a stool next to him and fired three shots at the suspect, and that the suspect took off running as the shots were fired.

The employee said he then proceeded to call 911 and lock up the store.

The employee said that he found one shell casing and placed it on the stool next to his gun, which he had unloaded.

Police who responded were not able to find any bullet holes or the other two shell casings. They also did not find any footprints to indicate which direction the suspect fled.
