This 1965 photo shows United Appeals Fund Chairman (right), Harry A. Ark, presenting a symbolic burning torch to J. Robert Groff, UAF president. A local banker, Harry chaired two fundraising campaigns for the UAF, which is today United Way. He was also involved with a number of causes – he was the Lions Club top rose seller, he fundraised for the Clifton Avenue Methodist Church, and also did service with the Shriners, Masons, Scottish Rite, and YMCA. In 1973, he was honored for his community work with the Exchange Club, “Book of Golden Deeds” Award. Recently, his daughter, a Heritage Center volunteer, finished processing the enormous Ark-Peairs family collection, which can be found here: https://cutt.ly/arkp. For her own service work to help preserve local history for the good of our community, she too was presented with the same Golden Deeds Award early in 2022.
