The restaurant is located at 1535 Xenia Ave., in space that previously housed Dona Margarota's, a Mexican restaurant that shut down late last year. The Calypso Grill and Smokehouse seats about 75 and employs around 25 people.

Calypso Grill is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week, and is closed Tuesdays.

Rainey — who has owned and operated Sunrise Cafe at 259 Xenia Ave. for 13 years — said a recent trip to the Caribbean triggered the idea to open a restaurant focusing on the region’s cuisine.

Calypso Grill’s includes jerk chicken and other Caribbean specialties, as well as some Colombian and Brazilian-inspired dishes such as empanadas and plantains, Rainey said.

Here’s how Rainey described the restaurant to this news outlet today: “We feature from-scratch, authentic fare, down to the fact we import pimento wood to smoke the meats as per Jamaican tradition. It’s a fun, lively atmosphere with fresh food and island-inspired cocktails, craft beer and wine.”
