The restaurant will have a drive-thru with an indoor dining area - similar to the other area KFC locations, Doebele said. The company is expecting to hire more than 40 full- and part-time employees.
In July 2019, the land where the KFC is located, 1520 Hillcrest, Ave., was rezoned by the city of Springfield before Plaza Street Partners, a real estate developer firm in Kansas, purchased the land, Alex Dietz, the economic development coordinator for Clark County said.
“That whole area is in what’s called a shopping center district and anytime there is any kind of change to it, such as putting in a new building, it needs to go before our planning board and city commission for approval,” Stephen Thompson, the city of Springfield planning and zoning administrator said.
After the rezoning was approved, Meijer Stores Limited Partnership sold the 0.88 acre parcel to Plaza Street Partners for $250,000 on March 3, Dietz said.
Thompson explained that Meijer has sold other “out-lot parcels” for development. The other parcels that Meijer has sold now house a McDonald’s and a Starbucks.
Dietz said there is a continued interest in development near the new KFC.
“The conversations that we’re having with retailers whether that be on the QSR (quick-service restaurant) side, the sit-down restaurant side or regular retail side, is heavily focus on Bechtle Avenue,” Dietz said.
Doebele said that KFC is proud to be part of the Springfield community.
“We are excited to add another location, making KFC’s Original Recipe®, Extra Crispy™ and Extra Crispy™ Tenders, Hot Wings™, KFC Famous Bowls®, Pot Pies, freshly hand prepared chicken sandwiches, biscuits and homestyle side items even more accessible,” she added.
There are more than 24,000 KFC restaurants in over 145 countries and territories around the world. The other Springfield KFC restaurant is located at 2407 E. Main St.
