The Springfield Foundation has created a new fund in honor of Jessie Shropshire, a local leader and philanthropist.

Shropshire, whose motto matched the United Negro College Fund’s “A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste,” passed away earlier this year.

“We were saddened to hear about the passing of Jessie Shropshire earlier this year. Her commitment to our community was truly inspiring,” foundation officials said. “As a longtime member of the African-American Community Fund and a founding member of the Women’s Partnership Funds, Ms. Shropshire shared her gifts of donations and volunteer time throughout her entire life. She touched many people’s hearts and minds through her community work and through her generosity.”

Shropshire designated the Springfield Foundation as a beneficiary to a life insurance policy, which established the Jessie L. Shropshire Fund after her passing. The fund will support St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church for their unrestricted use.

Shropshire graduated from Capital University with a B.A. in business management and management leadership at Wittenberg University. She retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Headquarters Air Force Material Command, computer resource management, after 40 years of service.

Her community involvement included the boards of the Springfield African-American Community Foundation, Jobs ‘n More, Citi-Lookout Springfield and Springfield Children’s Ministry Board, and she was a motivational speaker and CEO of Communication Dynamics.

“Ms. Jessie, as she was so fondly called, was a sweet, kind, and loving person. She brought life, love, and laughter to every space she occupied,” said Nettie Carter-Smith, Springfield Foundation Board Trustee. “I had the opportunity to serve on the African-American Community Fund Committee for several years; she was always welcoming and positive. Ms. Jessie understood the importance of service and volunteerism. She embodied those beautiful qualities and will truly be missed.”

The Springfield Foundation is committed to enhancing the quality of life in the community through philanthropy by connecting donors with causes and managing charitable funds.
