The former member of Congress plans to campaign on tackling climate change, The New York Times reported.
Inslee announced his run in a video released Friday morning before appearing at a news conference at a Seattle solar panel installation company, according to CNN.
Aisling Kerins has been tapped as Inslee's campaign manager, NBC News reported. His home base will be in Seattle, CNN reported.

Since Inslee, 68, took office in 2013, Washington state has had an economic expansion. Tech companies like Amazon have hired thousands of workers and companies like Boeing that specialize in exporting their products have had success, the Times reported.
But not all of his tenure as governor has come with success. He has not been able to enact the country's first carbon tax after voters were worried that energy costs would climb, the Times reported.
Inslee's announcement did not come as a surprise to many. He's been floating the idea of a presidential campaign for months, CNN reported.
After Friday morning's announcement, Inslee will continue stumping in Iowa and Nevada in the coming days, according to CNN.
