We are in shock to learn of an active shooter situation on the campus of UNC Charlotte. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives, those injured, the entire UNCC community and the courageous first responders who sprang into action to help others.

I am so sorry for these young people and their families. We fail as a nation when we fail to protect our children. You deserve better. #UNCC https://t.co/GbOLb3oo8A

Another shooting in America. This time at my cousin’s college in North Carolina. 2 students dead. What is it going to take for something to change?

My thoughts are with the UNC Charlotte community during this painful and difficult moment. We must act now to prevent gun violence by following the lead of the young people marching, the moms demanding action and advocates across the country who refuse to live in fear any longer.

It breaks my heart to hear of more gunshots and bloodshed, this time at UNC Charlotte. North Carolina has always been a special place for me. Sending love and strength to the people of that great state tonight.

A scenario that plays out over and over again in America: Students are ordered by police to put their hands up while evacuating the University of North Carolina Charlotte campus following a deadly shooting.

UNCC is not the first, or second, or third or fourth or fifth or sixth or seventh or eighth or ninth or tenth or eleventh shooting incident at an American college/university this year with death and or injury it’s the TWELFTH, this is a heartbreaking reality.

My heart goes out to the students, friends, and families of the victims of this tragedy and my thanks go out to the heroic first responders. When as a nation will we decide to act? #UNCC

I'm so sad for my Charlotte. Homicides way too frequent, 44 already this yr, & now 5 people have been shot at @unccharlotte today, 2 already declared dead. One shooter in custody. We need less violence, fewer guns, more community, and more understanding. #EndGunViolence #UNCC

Again and again and again. We can't accept this as our reality. For #UNCC, for Parkland, for Santa Fe, and for too many communities who've lived through a day at school turning into a nightmare—we have to fix this. https://t.co/3JcvaYK2T8

It happened here. Watching the reports of the shooting at UNC-Charlotte. I will speak to local authorities as soon as is practical for them. We will learn a lot very quickly - but what we already know is devastating. Tonight, we all stand with UNCC.

We stand strong with #UNCC. We will honor the victims of this tragedy with action to end gun violence once and for all. #EnoughIsEnough

I'm heartsick for the victims of the #UNCC shooting and their family, friends, and classmates. Schools should be a safe haven for students and faculty, but again we see a horrific act of violence on a school campus. Enough is enough.
