Mississippi teacher charged with attempted murder of toddler after driving into lake, police say

A Mississippi teacher and mother of three is behind bars after police said she deliberately drove a vehicle with her toddler inside into Columbus Lake.

According to WTVA and the Clarion Ledger, police arrested Cari Campbell Cullum, 34, on an attempted murder charge Friday in connection with the Sept. 21 incident.

Authorities said a man broke a window to save the Hamilton woman and her 2-year-old child after she backed her SUV into the water overnight, WTVA reported. Nobody was hurt, police said.

In a Monday news release, Columbus police Chief Fred Shelton said investigators "believe this was not an accident," the Clarion Ledger reported.

According to the newspaper, Cullum, a teacher at Hamilton Elementary School, is being held at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. Another person is caring for her children, police said.
