More than 58,000 could claim part of $8.6 million

Unclaimed funds list to be published in News-Sun Tuesday.

More than 58,000 current or former Clark County residents have unclaimed funds waiting for them with a total value of more than $8.6 million.

The Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Unclaimed Funds will publish a list of all those owed more than $50 in Tuesday’s Springfield News-Sun.

When the department published a similar list in Champaign County in April, more than 12,000 people were owed a total of $1.3 million.

“Those numbers fluctuate each week,” said Department of Commerce spokeswoman Karen Bowman. The agency only publishes the list in the newspaper once a year, but is constantly adding new unclaimed accounts to its list.

The funds could be from dormant accounts, forgotten rent and utility deposits, uncashed checks or insurance policies and many more sources.

In fiscal year 2014, the agency returned a record $74.4 million statewide.

“We always like to say we’re the one government agency that likes to give your money back,” Bowman said.

The advertised names will appear in Tuesday’s paper in alphabetical order by the owner’s last known city and then in alphabetical order by the owner’s last name.

Anyone wishing to check if they're owed money, from less than $1 to thousands, can go to www.treasurehunt.ohio.gov.

Those without Internet access can write to the department at 77 South High St., 20th Floor, Columbus, OH, 43215. Include the name to be researched and the counties in which that individual has resided.

Anyone with questions about unclaimed funds can call toll free at 1-877-644-6823.
