A 23-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of a man behind a Meijer store in northwest Springfield earlier this month.

Deondrae Poole, 23, faces charges of aggravated murder and aggravated robbery for allegedly stabbing Darrin Polluck and stealing his backpack on Dec. 3.

Poole was arrested near the intersection of Mitchell Boulevard and North Belmont Avenue on Thursday night, according to the city.

He is currently being held at the Clark County Jail.

According to court records, police responded to the scene of the Meijer incident at around 11:11 a.m., finding Polluck in the grass near the loading dock behind the garden center with a stab wound to the chest.

He was transported to Mercy Health – Springfield, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined the knife wound to his heart caused his death.

Surveillance footage showed Poole and Polluck together prior to the stabbing, with Poole eventually chasing Polluck, according to court records. A witness saw the men fighting over a backpack and Poole leaving the scene with the backpack.

Poole was arrested on unrelated warrants and allegedly confessed to the stabbing and robbery at police headquarters.
