15-year-old dies in two-car crash

Miami East student killed in wreck at U.S. 40, Ohio 571.

BETHEL TWP., Clark County — A 15-year-old girl was killed and three people were injured when two cars crashed on a rain-slicked road in Bethel Twp. Sunday afternoon.

Christen Hensley, 15, of Troy, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at the intersection of U.S. 40 and Ohio 571. Three other victims were taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where they all were treated and released.

According to information from the Springfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Joshua Treon, 17, of Casstown, was headed south on Ohio 571 when he drove through the intersection. Treon’s 1992 Buick Century crashed into a 2011 Chevy Cruze driven by Daniel Elliot, 51, of Vandalia. Elliot was headed East on U.S. 40. Both vehicles went off the southeast side of the road.

Hensley, 15, was a passenger in Treon’s vehicle. Both she and Treon appeared to have been wearing seat belts, according to the report.

Deborah Elliot, 54, of Vandalia, was a passenger in the Chevy Cruze.

Todd Rappold, superintendent for Miami East Local Schools, said both Treon and Hensley attend Miami East High School, where Treon is a senior and Hensley was a sophomore.

He said Treon is a popular student who was named homecoming king in the fall.

“Probably everybody in the high school is his friend,” Rappold said.

Hensley had only attended school in the district a short time, but Rappold said she made friends quickly.

Grief counselors will be available for students this week, Rappold said.

“It will be very difficult for our kids and more than anything else our prayers continue to go out to their families,” Rappold said.

The crash remains under investigation.
