Urbana City Council has approved a proposal to annex a 2 1/2-acre lot for a new Dollar Tree store, which is targeted to open July 30.

Construction began in early spring on the 9,000-square-foot store, which is located on East U.S. 36 and will bring about 20 jobs to the area, said City Council president Marty Hess.

Dollar Store’s representatives are completing the process of working with city officials to annex the location into Urbana in order to receive city services, said Doug Crabill, community development manager for Urbana.

City Council approved the petition to annex the location, essentially agreeing to provide typical city services, Crabill said. The annexation was part of a deal city council struck with Dollar Tree last fall to provide water and sewage with the condition that the representatives would later file for annexation, he added.

The next step, he said, is for the county commissioner to approve the annexation, which Crabill said he doesn’t anticipate being a problem.

“We’re incredibly excited about the fact that we continue to grow and are opening in Urbana,” said Chelle Davis, a Dollar Tree media and community relations coordinator.

The store is coming to Urbana in order for Dollar Tree to be where Middle America is and to meet core customers where they shop, Davis said.

Positions at the store are still available, and Davis said anyone who is interested in applying can go online to fill out an application.

“We’re incredibly excited about the grand opening and being able to provide an exciting mix of things that our customers need every day, plus the things that they want,” Davis said. “It doesn’t matter what the economy is doing, people like to do something special to celebrate. At Dollar Tree, you can do that without breaking the budget.”
