Then & Now: A 128-year look back at Springfield’s City Building

This image from the nine volume publication, Springfield Illustrated, shows Springfield’s brand new City Building and Marketplace under construction during the second half of 1889. O.S. Kelly’s grand fountain, which was dedicated on July 4, 1889 can be seen in the bottom left corner and you can see signs of the work in progress around the building as workers prepared the building for its opening in February 1890. 127 years later, this building remains as one of few reminders from that Golden Age and stands as a symbol of our community's past and today, as the Heritage Center, it is literally the home of our past where the stories of Clark County’s history are preserved and shared.
