The Thanksgiving Day Fountain 5K is returning for its 12th year in Springfield with all proceeds benefiting the Clark County Special Olympics.

Residents wanting to participate in the Fountain 5K have until today, to register and receive a long-sleeve race shirt. Participants who register after today are not guaranteed a shirt. The last day to register is Monday.

Race Director Greg Evilsizor started the Fountain 5K in 2008 because Springfield did not have a Thanksgiving race in which he and his friends could participate.

The first year, 15 to 20 people ran with Evilsizor and this year about 1,300 people are expected to participate.

The Fountain 5K attracted participants from 16 states and over 100 different cities last year, Evilsizor said.

“It has become a tradition for a lot of families,” Evilsizor said. “Seeing them come out, celebrate, and then go do their thing, it’s well worth it.”

In college, Evilsizor said he volunteered with the Special Olympics and that experience inspired him to have all proceeds from this race benefit the Clark County Special Olympics.

For the past several years, the organization has received about $10,000 each year from the Fountain 5K, Clark County Special Olympics Coordinator Kathy Duffin said.

“It’s our biggest fundraiser,” Duffin said. “It’s really what keeps us afloat every year.”

The 200 Clark County Special Olympic athletes do not pay to participate in organization programs. The money raised is used for transportation, lodging, entry fees, and sports equipment expenses.

Registration is $25 for the 5K and $15 for the 1 mile race. Both races will begin at 8 a.m. with participants walking/running through the historic Ridgewood District of North Fountain Boulevard.

There will be age-group and overall winners, who will receive Thanksgiving themed treats from Le Torte Dolci Bakery in Springfield. All participants will receive a custom race medal.

During the race, DJ Chill will play music and Scout’s Cafe will provide coffee and hot chocolate.

“We’ve got several companies that are the best of the best in Springfield that really support the race and try to make it an event that everyone enjoys.”
