MORE: Historic Springfield building could become year-round marketplace
A local food council was proposed at the summit in previous years and is now in the developing stages, said Pam Bennett, director of the Ohio State University Extension in Clark County. An active city market committee is also exploring developing a year-round market-place at the former Myers Market downtown, she said.
“We’re bringing people together and synergizing our efforts,” Bennett said. “It’s a great team effort.”
Attendees will be provided an update on the food council, as well as the Community Health Improvement Plan, Bennett said. About 100 people attended the event last year. This year, they’re hoping for 125 people.
“It’s focusing on all things food,” Bennett said. “Anything that has to do with health, healthy eating or purchasing local foods.”

Ohio State University Professor Casey Hoy, the Kellogg Endowed Chair in Agricultural Ecosystem Management at the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will be the keynote speaker for the event.
Other sessions include how to fit your garden on a plate, why the local foods effort needs you, pollinators and local foods and other community panels.
The council will also be talking about food accessibility, marketing, education and business development, she said.
The deadline to register is Thursday. Cost is $25 and includes locally produced meals for breakfast and lunch.
The event is being sponsored by the extension office, the Community Health Foundation and the Springfield Foundation.
