This 1927 photo shows businesses on the east side of North Fountain Avenue, including the Heaume Hotel and Kroger Grocery and Baking, which had nearly 30 Springfield locations at the time.

Gray Electric was at that location for almost 20 years, as were Fitler and Hill Wallpaper, the Saunder "Drive it Yourself" car rental franchise, which was pioneered in Nebraska in 1916, and the Madison Billiard Parlor.

The area has received an economic boost in recent years with business like Winans and Bada Bing Pizza moving into the block.
