Many parents on the Springfield News-Sun Facebook page are unhappy with the Springfield City School District dropping to an “F” overall on the state report card.

Springfield received an “F” in 10 out of 14 categories.

Parents have blamed the environment, district, teachers, children, government, and other parents for the grade received.

"Very sad at these results," John Ridder said. "I hope parents will step in to make corrections. Central government action is a proven failure."

"The education these children receive is sub-par on multiple levels and the administration is totally responsible," Sharon Sterling Mains said. "They need a new board of education, superintendent and principals. Every administrator is responsible for the poor performance of the district.

"Unfortunately, the government has made it more difficult for teachers to actually TEACH," Andrea Rosasco said. "With all the new education testing requirements, teachers spend a large portion of their time preparing kids for state mandated tests, instead of the stuff they really need."

Even though the district received an “F,” some parents praised the Springfield City School District.

"Our son attended Springfield City Schools and was in the first graduating class having attended all 4 years at Springfield High School," Yvonne Bonnie Shelburne said. "He received an excellent education in SCS, graduated from Miami University (Ohio) with degrees in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, got a full ride to Purdue plus stipend for his Masters in Aerospace Engineering, and he is now a rocket scientist at Los Alamos National Lab in New Mexico."

Other parents encouraged participation in the school district.

"Everyone on here complaining can feel free to bring that same energy to a PTO meeting or school board meeting to take part in the decision making, since you can do better," Janea Ivory said.

Springfield City School District is one of four districts in the state to receive an “F” overall grade. The other three districts are Youngstown City in Mahoning County, Jefferson Twp. Local in Montgomery County and East Cleveland City School District in Cuyahoga County.

Springfield City School District Superintendent Bob Hill said as the leader of the district, he refuses to let the report card, “define the district, our dedicated educators and support staff and our students.”

"We are on the right path and we will continue to push forward," Hill said.
