Springfield man wins $500,000 in Georgia lottery

SPRINGFIELD — A last-minute lottery ticket purchase recently paid off for a Springfield man at a Georgia gas station.

Phillip Lambert, 31, was working as a temporary civilian employee at Fort Stewart in Hinesville, Ga., when he stopped at a gas station and purchase a lottery ticket while he paid for gas. The Monopoly instant game ticket paid off with a $500,000 top prize.

According to information from the Georgia Lottery Corporation, he purchased the ticket at Clyde’s Market in Hinesville and scratched it off when he returned home.

Lambert said the ticket appeared to be a loser at first, but as he scratched off the final item, he saw that he had won the top prize.

“I pretty much almost had a heart attack,” he joked.

He said because most businesses that would verify the ticket were closed, he had to wait until Monday to cash it in.

Lambert said he plans to use most of the money to help pay off debt for himself, as well as his family. The rest, he said, will go toward a home and a portion will be saved. He said he plays the lottery every few days in Ohio, but it was the first ticket he had purchased in Georgia. He plans to return to Springfield in the next couple weeks.

Lambert said he had played Monopoly tickets in Ohio, and decided to buy one since he was familiar with it.

“I just figured it’s a Monopoly ticket. It’s only $5, so why not?”
