Springfield event promotes Earth Day's 40th anniversary

SPRINGFIELD — Earth Day’s 40th anniversary will be recognized at a local event Thursday, April 22, in downtown Springfield.

The Earth Day celebration will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at City Happ Plaza and will feature live music, lunch and a special appearance by “Mother Earth.”

This year’s message: Eat locally produced food, grow some vegetables, plant a tree, get involved and commit to reduce your impact on the planet.

“We wanted something fun and something to commemorate the 40th anniversary,” said Carly Compton, project coordinator for local Great American Cleanup efforts. “So we’re mixing socializing with a lot of great information on tips about cleaning up the environment.”

Keep Clark County Beautiful is sponsoring the celebration.

Lunch will be available after 11:30 a.m.; a brief ceremony at about 12:30 p.m. will include speakers Charles Patterson, KCCB president; Sheriff Gene Kelly; and Deacon Norm Horstman of St. Raphael Catholic Church.

The celebration will feature live music by John Lippolis and Dave Waugh and buffalo burgers ($5 each) made from locally raised bison at the Running Bare Ranch.
