A Springfield animal shelter will hold a special open house event today.

The Clark County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or SPCA, will host its second annual Hearts for Hound event. Attendees will be able to visit adoptable cats and dogs, learn about becoming a volunteer with SPCA, and attend a story time with therapy dogs for preschool age children from 4 to 5 p.m.

SPCA aims to raise money for a vet care fund to help sick and elderly animals, according to Krissi Hawke, executive director and humane agent at Clark County SPCA.

“It is just to have people make a donation for our program and have a heart for our hounds,” Hawke said.

Hearts for Hound will be held at the Clark County SPCA, 21 Walter St., Springfield.

Donations can be made by sending a check to SPCA’s vet care fund at Northside Veterinary Clinic, 10 Critter Court Rd., Springfield.

SPCA hours of operation are: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12 to 3 p.m., Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.

“It is always important to be open to our community and to the public, to have them come in and see how we do things here, and to get the community involved with the animals here in our community and with us,” Hawke said.
