The Second Harvest Food Bank, in conjunction with local schools and community organizations, will begin providing meals for children in Clark, Champaign and Logan Counties on Monday.

In its fourth year, the organization’s summer food program is available to kids age 1-18 and helps bridge the gap for those who get breakfast and lunch at school during the school year.

Providing free, pre-packaged meals, the program runs until August 21.

“We didn't have a program like that in this area, and the Department of Education reached out to see if we were interested in that,” executive director Tyra Jackson said. “We've been doing that for the past three years we will be doing that again this year so students are able to come and get food during the summer when school's out.”

Each child will receive five breakfasts and five lunches per week with the number of meals given out to total more than 20,000.

“Often they aren't provided those two staple meals that they receive during the school year, breakfast and lunch, and we're able to provide that to them,” Jackson said.

In addition to the children’s meals program, the food bank provides food the those in the need through mobile pantries, direct deliveries, the Commodity Supplemental Food Program for seniors and through its many partner agencies.

The summer food program will have 15 pick-up sites:
